Bad Badger's Inaugural Production:
WARNING: UNDER 18 NOT PERMITTED W/O PARENT OR GUARDIAN DUE TO LANGUAGE, NUDITY, SEXUAL AND ADULT SITUATIONS, SMOKING AND VIOLENCE.
Bad Badger Productions presents the Portland Premiere of Red Light Winter by Adam Rapp, playwright brother of famed Rent original actor Anthony Rapp. Opening May 18th at Brooklyn Bay Theatre (1825 SE Franklin St, Bay K, Portland, OR, 97202) and running through June 3rd, Red Light Winter stars Portland favorites Brian Allard and Andrew Bray and New York guest artist Jenn Gartner. The show will be directed by Jan Powell, revered founding artistic director of Tygres Heart Shakespeare Company, and recent artistic director of Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival.
Named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2006, Red Light Winter depicts a unique love triangle in a way that bizarrely, dreamily juxtaposes the profane and the transcendent. Poetic, desolate, erotic, this enigmatic meditation on friendship and sexuality mingles the beautiful and the squalid in a raw, real, near-fantasy double episode of yearning, seizing and surrender.
Red Light Winter tells the story of Matt and Davis, long-time friends on the brink of turning 30, who travel to Amsterdam in an effort to lift Matt’s persistent depression and allow Davis the sewing of a few last wild oats before he settles down with his fiancée. Enter Christina, a French prostitute that Davis has purchased as a gift to cheer up Matt, who becomes a consuming mystery in both men’s lives.
Through the entwining relations between these three unanchored souls, identity, love, and lust become more than they at first seem—they are questions without answers, beginnings without endings.
Described by Charles Isherwood in the New York Times as a “story of erotic fixation and the havoc it can wreak on sensitive souls,” the show’s depiction of competitive attachment and the search for self in another “oozes sexual intrigue and tension” (Chris Jones, Variety) as it accelerates toward an unpredictable climax.
Red Light Winter will come out as a major motion picture in 2013, starring Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo and Billy Crudup.
Under 18 not permitted without parent or guardian due to language, subject matter, nudity, and sexual behavior.
